Australian Hearing Services Program: Everything You Need To Know.

Australian Hearing Services Program

An estimated 3.6 million Australians live with some degree of hearing loss. The causes are often ageing or exposure to excessive noise.

The Hearing Services Program (HSP), launched to help people with hearing loss, provides eligible Australians with easy access to high-quality hearing services. The HSP funds hearing services and hearing aids for eligible Australians, who are granted a limited number of fully subsidised hearing services, including entry-level hearing aids.

If you’re eligible, you’ll have access to a fully subsidized audiological assessment with an accredited provider every 5 years, along with annual hearing reviews. The initial hearing test will determine whether you have a hearing impairment and the severity of any hearing loss. If required, our audiologist may provide you with a detailed report for your GP to review. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss suitable hearing aids with us. At A Better Ear, we take an inclusive, transparent, and educational approach, which sets us apart from other local hearing clinics.

Am I eligible for the Hearing Services Program?

The Hearing Services Program supports most Australian citizens and permanent residents with funding for hearing services and hearing aids. Are you an Australian citizen or permanent resident, 21 or above? If you are, and can tick “yes” to one of the following statements, you’re eligible for the Hearing Services Program:

  • You are a pensioner concession card holder and over the age of 65 – does not include self-funded retirees
  • You are an eligible disability pension cardholder
  • You hold a Gold Repatriation Health Card for all conditions
  • You hold a White Repatriation Health Card for conditions that include hearing loss
  • You are a member of the Australian Defence Force or an Australian Veteran, holding a DVA pension concession
  • You are undergoing an Australian Government-funded vocational rehabilitation service and you are referred by your service provider
  • You are a dependent of a person in one of the above categories

How to check if I’m eligible for the Hearing Services Program?

Ready to check whether you’re eligible for the HSP? You can do so on the Australian Government website. You can also get in touch with us at A Better Ear.

What happens if I’m not eligible?

If, after having checked the government website, you find that you’re not eligible for a hearing aid that falls under the HSP, we recommend you speak with us to discuss your options. Many people are under the misconception that you need to spend top dollar to get a “good” hearing aid. Whilst performance does come at a price, everyone’s circumstances are unique and at A Better Ear, we specialise in tailoring a solution to you.

How do I apply for the Hearing Services Program?

If you’ve checked your eligibility and want to apply for the HSP, there are two options available. Firstly, you can apply for the program yourself online via the Government website. The quick and easy online application will help not only determine your eligibility but will also help process the application if eligible. Alternatively, if you’d rather speak to someone to help with your application, give us a call at (07) 3821 3744, and we can do this on your behalf.
