“Why don’t hearing aids work?”

When it comes to a hearing aid adjustment, our principal Audiologist and founder Penelope Woods BMus, MAudS, MAudA (CCP) gets asked this question frequently when meeting new patients and when speaking publicly. Sometimes the cause is a broken aid. More often the problem is a poor hearing aid adjustment. Poor tuning or adjustment is one of the most common causes of hearing aid abandonment. Think of it this way; wearing a poorly adjusted hearing aid is a bit like trying to wear someone else’s shoes. Not only is it unpleasant, but it’s also impractical.

 

Common Problems

Do any of these problems sound familiar?

  • High pitched squealing
  • Low pitched whooshing sounds
  • Hearing aid falling out
  • Pain in, or around, the ear
  • Sounds that are either too loud or too quiet
  • Inability to hear well whilst on the phone
  • Volume, but not clarity
  • Everything is loud except what you want to hear!

All these symptoms could point to a poor hearing aid adjustment.

 

Hearing Aid Adjustment: An Expert Discipline

It is sometimes thought that the more you spend on a hearing aid, the better it will sound. Unfortunately, this is only partly true because it overlooks two important points:

  • how well the hearing aid has been tuned to the wearer’s prescription, and
  • how well the hearing aid has been fit to the wearer’s ear.

Hearing aid adjustments remains a skilled human discipline. Certainly, the cost of a hearing aid can influence clarity (especially in noisy or challenging listening environments) but so does expert tuning. To get the best results you need a clinic like A Better Ear that uses the internationally recognised gold standard for every single fitting. Anything else and you are likely getting short-changed.

We take the time to understand you and your hearing, noting where you’re experiencing hearing difficulties and re-establishing your hearing goals. Then we perform the same comprehensive diagnostic hearing test that has delighted hundreds of our patients. With your diagnostic measurements, we then develop you a tailored plan (1 hour appointment).

To ensure your hearing aids are working perfectly, we send them away for diagnostic servicing and testing by their original manufacturer. We work with all major manufacturers in Australia so we can quickly have your hearing aids back as good as new. (Charges may apply for repairs not covered by the manufactures warranty).

Re-fitting and Reprogramming

Once we know your hearing aids are free of faults, we reprogram them from scratch, to perfectly suit your unique hearing prescription and listening preferences. This fitting appointment is performed according to the highest standard of evidence based patient care (according to Audiology Australia and NAL), it includes Real Ear Measurements (1 hour appointment).

Follow-up
Consultation

After having worn your reprogrammed and personally tailored hearing aids in the real world for a week, we consult with you again to check the results you are experiencing. At this follow-up appointment, we make any further adjustments required to ensure your hearing needs and goals are being met.
